If you have thin or fine hair, keep these things in mind

Thin hair has its own set of pluses and drawbacks, just like every other sort of hair. On the one hand, it is typically very soft and smooth. It generally dries quickly. And it looks great in bob. However, there are several things that you should never do to thin hair since they can cause it to appear and feel unsightly.

Thin hair, on the other hand, can be a real pain. While there are a variety of causes for thin hair, including stress, genetics, and a fine texture, all of these factors lead to one thing: limp hair that is difficult to style. It might be damaged while styling or fall flat moments after leaving your home.

That's why, if you have thin hair, the greatest thing to do is select your haircut intelligently. "You should not have your hair over-texturized or over-layered when it comes to color," NYC-based hairstylist Jenna Mast tells Bustle. "A good haircut gives the appearance of density and movement."

After that, you'll need to focus on keeping your hair healthy. Here are some of the worst haircare mistakes that could make your thin hair look and feel worse.

1. Regularly Using Hot Styling Tools

I'm not sure why you have to put that much heat on your hair, but I know it's tempting to sear your locks within an inch of their life all for the sake of extra curl and body. But try to resist. "Never apply too much heat to fine/thin hair," Mast adds. "In the salon, we seldom utilize our hot tools when they are all the way up and never on clients with fine hair. You must employ a heat protectant and decrease the temperature of the hot tools if you have thin or delicate hair."

2. Sleeping On Cotton Pillowcases

Instead of cotton, you'll want silk for all that slippery fun.

"It's a game-changer," says Mast. "Even the finest cotton pillowcases tug and pull on delicate hair. Silk pillowcases help to minimize breakage in thin hair, which is prone to breakage."

3. Lightening Too Much

A few highlights are nice, but anything too drastic should be avoided.

"Never over-embellish fine hair because it will take away from the depth of the hair, making it appear even thinner," claims celebrity colorist Michael Boychuck of COLOR Salon in Las Vegas. Instead of all-over color, try bayalage, hair painting, or highlighting techniques for a lighter tone.

4. Using Products Containing Sulfates

When you shop for hair care items, read the labels the next time. "Avoid ... sulfates in shampoos and conditioners, and instead use a sulfate-free shampoo and lighter density conditioners for fine hair to keep it from weighing down. "Boychuck states. You'll notice a significant difference."

5. Shampooing Every Day

If you can do it, try washing your hair every few days rather than every day. "The more you shampoo your hair, the more healthy oils you're removing," claims Barefoot Blonde and creator of Barefoot Blonde Hair Amber Fillerup Clark. "And the less you wash it, the less damage you'll do to it." As you know, this is quite harmful.

6. Using Products Not Meant For Your Hair

When choosing a hair product, don't just grab any old thing.

"You should utilize shampoo and conditioner based on your hair type," according to Fillerup Clark. "Generally, thin hair is flat and lifeless, so you'll want a thickening or volumizing shampoo and conditioner to give it some bounce.

7. Overusing The Blow Dryer

That's a shame, but it is true that not everyone has hair that dries into something manageable. However, if your hair is thin, it may be worthwhile to look into. Too much blow drying, according to board-certified facial plastic surgeon and hair expert Vish Banthia, MD, FACS, can leave your hair dry and lifeless. If you must dry your hair, the ideal choice is to use the coldest temperature.

8. Drying It With A Towel

Do you take a towel and rub it over your head after getting out of the shower? If that's the case, you might be causing a lot of damage. It's preferable to use a cloth (such as an old T-shirt or a microfiber towel) to gently blot your hair dry instead of rubbing it with your hands. According to hairstylist Lisa J. Anderson Stubbs, this will prevent the hair cuticle from getting rough, which can assist with reducing frizz.

9. Pulling It Back Tightly

The last thing you want to do with fine hair is pull it back tightly, according to Mast. You should avoid extremely tight ponytails and braids, as they can pull hair out at the root. Not desirable.

10. Applying Too Many Products

Thin hair is naturally somewhat flaccid, so using an excessive amount of product on it isn't a good idea. "Too many treatments/oils will make your hair appear greasy," Mast explains. It'll need extra shampoo applications as well. All of these are drawbacks for thin hair.

11. Cutting It While It's Dry

If you usually have your hair cut dry, ask if they'd be willing to leave it wet while cutting it. Starting a hair cut with dirty wet hair and then finishing on dry hair may contribute thickness and fullness, according to Bernhards Ziverts, master stylist and owner of Matii Salon in New York City.

Avoiding the above blunders can significantly enhance the look and feel of your hair.
