Hair has many vital functions, but healthy, shiny hair is always a symbol of beauty. However, healthy hair can also be very difficult to achieve. Here are 7 easy tips for healthy and shiny hair:
1. Avoid heat damage by protecting your hair with heat-protectant products
Many people use flat irons or curling irons to style their hair in sleek or curly styles. However these tools can dry out your hair. Protect your hairstyle investment by using a heat protectant product before styling you hair with heat-based tools. Look for ones that say “heat-protectant” on the bottle! Read the directions carefully because heat protectants are usually not meant to be used on damp or wet hair.
2. Wash your hair less often
If you’re going to skip a shampoo day, make sure to protect your hair with a leave-in conditioner or a healthy dose of olive oil. Skip daily shampoos and opt for a gentler cleanser every other day. If you have oily hair, try skipping an additional day in between washes. Be careful not to overdue it though! Too little washing can add greasiness and too much washing will dry out your beautiful locks.
3. Sugar scrubs for healthy, shiny hair
Sugar scrubs are the perfect at-home spa treatment for healthy, shiny hair! Mix equal parts sugar and oil (preferably coconut oil) with 1-2 drops of peppermint essential oil. Add the mixture to your bath or shower water and massage into your hair and scalp for a few minutes before rinsing out with warm water.
4. Condition, condition, condition! With healthy hair comes healthy split ends. The best way to fight them is by conditioning your hair daily with a mask/conditioner combination. For healthy, shiny hair combine two tablespoons of coconut oil (at room temperature) with ¼ cup of organic apple cider vinegar and one egg yolk in a small bowl. Apply the mixture from root to tip on clean wet hair and let it sit for 10-15 minutes before rinsing out in the shower.
5. Limit shampoo chemicals
Shampoos can strip healthy oils and leave your hair dry and brittle. Avoid these chemicals by switching to an organic shampoo and conditioner.
6. Eat healthy fats
Healthy fats nourish your body from the inside out, so add nuts, avocados, olive oil and coconut oil to your diet for healthy skin and shiny hair!
7. Swimming in chlorinated pools is bad news for healthy hair...and skin!
When you’re swimming in a chlorinated pool it strips healthy oils from your skin and hair which leads to brittleness. Limit the amount of time you spend swimming in chlorinated pools or invest in a swim cap to keep your healthy locks looking healthy!
